Back again

Kenzi started round 3 yesterday and so far, so good. It's 3 chemo drugs over 2 days, so we should be able to head back to the apartment tomorrow. Last time she had these drugs, she had some jaw pain so please pray that it will be less this time and that any other side effects will be minimal.

It was so nice to be at the apartment, it's actually hard coming back here to sleep. Kenzi doesn't seem to mind and is still relaxed and bossing the nurses around as usual. She's figured out how she likes things and has no problem directing everyone to do it her way. I love that she still has her spunk. The other day while we are hanging out she said, "Cancer isn't as bad as I thought it was. I get to be a lazy couch potato while the medicine kills the tumor." She is helping me to change my perspective on life right now with her positive outlook. I was feeling nervous, not wanting to mention that it was a long weekend, afraid she would be upset that we were missing out, but when she realized it, she said, "everyday here is like a long weekend!" Her spirit is amazing and I pray that it's not dampened over these next months. She is my inspiration right now.

Wes and I are slowly figuring out how to make 2 separate lives work together. We had to shop for another car, as we need one here to drive back and forth to the hospital. It was ok not to have one here when we were admitted but we need one in case of emergency and for all our appointments now. We were here 3 times last week, so we're realizing why we need to be nearby. Even still, it's nice to have a reason to get out. We need to avoid busy places, so we'll have to find some nice parks to go explore while we're here. 

Thanks again for all your support, through prayers, gifts, messages and financial donations. Even the most minor thing like a sniffle is so hard to deal with and process while we are at our emotional peak, so it's such a blessing to not have to worry about all the extra expenses on top of everything else. We are so well loved and supported by all of you and cannot express it enough. God is good!

Day 3

 It's the third day since this all started, but it feels like a lifetime. I had intended to post a small update earlier today, but now all those things that I was gonna say feel so unimportant. We were able to take Kenzi out onto a rooftop patio to enjoy the sunshine and as we were there the oncologist came with some news: It is cancer.  They don't like to use that word with kids, because childhood cancer is very different than adults and kids are super resilient, so when we explained it to Kenzi we avoided it and used the word "mass". No matter the term, it's a part of our lives now. We don't have any words, our hearts are just broken. We will hopefully learn more next week; what type of mass it is and how to best treat it. The plan is to send Kenzi for a PET scan on Wednesday to find out if it's spread or not. The oncologist is very optimistic, but it's still too much to process. Kenzi is a rockstar! It has a name.

 Sunday was a "quiet" day. Wes left that morning to go see the kids in Vernon and Kenzi and I hung out. She's super excited to play Minecraft and I actually had to drag her outside to sit on the patio with me. We had a movie night and we really felt God's peace that evening, so thanks to everyone praying for that.  Yesterday was hard. We had a meeting with the doctors. Her mass is called a ewing sarcoma, which is a type of bone cancer. The plan is to start chemo this Friday. Until then, they will be doing a lot of baseline tests. Yesterday she had a kidney function test, today is a bone marrow biopsy, which she will be put to sleep for and tomorrow is the dreaded PET scan to see if it has spread anywhere else in the body. Please pray that it has stayed in the chest cavity. Thursday will be a long meeting where they will lay out the "roadmap" of our treatment plan. Today marks one year that our lives changed forever. On April 14, 2021 Kenzi was flown to BC Children's Hospital when they found a giant tumor in her chest. 2 days later they confirmed it was cancer and a week later, after many more tests, she was starting chemotherapy. We are so grateful to be on the other side of treatment now, but it's not without its many scars. Looking back somedays, it feels surreal and we can't even believe it happened. Other times, the emotions are still so raw that the tears won't stop flowing.  We survived treatment by living one day at a time. From April to January, Kenzi spent 276 days away from home; 123 of those, were actually in the hospital and 50 of them were spent in Toronto. Kenzi was home in Vernon for only 13 days during treatment. Our family was separated a lot while we tried to figure out how to live in 2 completely different worlds.
