The Big Hurdle

It's been a while since I've posted a blog, but every time I sit down to do it, my mind is a blur. These last few weeks have been mentally and emotionally draining. After we found out we were going to Toronto, it took another 2 weeks to actually get a date for surgery. The waiting around was frustrating, knowing that there was so much to plan and book and not being able to do it. We zoomed with the surgeons last Wednesday to discuss the plan for surgeries and got a call Friday letting us know the first surgery would be next Thursday, October 7. It wasn't until this Monday that we got all the details and were able to book flights and accommodations. We fly out Monday morning and found an air bnb right across from the hospital to stay. We need to be at the hospital on Tuesday for some appointments, but afterwards we plan to go to Niagara Falls for a night while Kenzi is still feeling well.  Kenzi's first surgery is to drain the tumour, which looks somewhat like a cyst.  The last few weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind. We had gotten into a routine these last few months and had adjusted to our current "normal," but everything seemed to change all at once. We moved to a new place that didn't feel like home, we were waiting for scans, unsure of what treatment was coming next and we were missing out on the first day of school and trying to sort out what "school" for our family would look like. Since the last blog post we arranged a house swap with some friends in Pitt Meadows and had some schoolwork lined up for our kids. Life was falling into place and we were feeling good about our plans. Yesterday that all changed with one phone call. Our doctors met with the oncology team in Toronto and they decided the best course of treatment would be a two step procedure to remove the tumour and it would be best done in Toronto. The plan is to first drain the tumour, followed by a round of chemo and then do the big surgery to remove it. Th

Round 9: ✔

Yesterday Kenzi completed her 9th round of chemo, the last one before surgery. We know we've said that before, but we're hoping it's true this time. We got the official call from the surgeon's office today confirming the date for the 17th of September. The only thing that could change that is if the oncology team at Sick Kid's Hospital in Toronto come up with a better plan. They will be discussing Kenzi's case at their team meeting tomorrow, so we should hopefully hear soon what the final plan is. We're learning to adapt easily to change, as that seems to be a big part of cancer treatment.  Kenzi is feeling well after her chemo yesterday. It was delayed a few days because her platelets were too low, but it was a quick overnight treatment and things went well. They only gave her 2 of the 3 regular drugs, so her body has an easier time recovering for surgery. Next Wednesday, Kenzi has an MRI and then when her counts are starting to come up, we can go home to V
