Toronto

 The last few weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind. We had gotten into a routine these last few months and had adjusted to our current "normal," but everything seemed to change all at once. We moved to a new place that didn't feel like home, we were waiting for scans, unsure of what treatment was coming next and we were missing out on the first day of school and trying to sort out what "school" for our family would look like. Since the last blog post we arranged a house swap with some friends in Pitt Meadows and had some schoolwork lined up for our kids. Life was falling into place and we were feeling good about our plans. Yesterday that all changed with one phone call. Our doctors met with the oncology team in Toronto and they decided the best course of treatment would be a two step procedure to remove the tumour and it would be best done in Toronto. The plan is to first drain the tumour, followed by a round of chemo and then do the big surgery to remove it. This means we will be in Toronto for about a month. We will meet with the doctors on Monday to find out more details, but we could fly out as early as next week. I know I said we are getting used to last minute changes, but saying it and feeling it are two different things. We are thankful for the resources available in this country and we obviously want the best care possible for Kenzi, but we honestly weren't expecting this. For now, we will take it a day at a time and trust that God will carry us through this hurdle also. We will update you as we know more, but please pray for us and the doctors as plans are made. Also, pray for Linden, Ayden and Beckham as we will most likely leave them at home with my parents and we will all be separated for some time.

    Praying for all of your requests & more! Trusting in God, is hard when your plans get sidetracked…but He knows the future, and all that entails! When all else fails, I will say, out loud, “I trust YOU”! And leave the details in His hands. Sending 💗 & (((hugs)))

    It was nice to run into you in the waiting room the other day. I'm sorry to hear that the plan you had hoped for are different. May you continue to find peace and comfort in our faithful Father who loves Kenzie! There is so much comfort found in scripture, but I also find worship psalm can speak to my heart.  It's the third day since this all started, but it feels like a lifetime. I had intended to post a small update earlier today, but now all those things that I was gonna say feel so unimportant. We were able to take Kenzi out onto a rooftop patio to enjoy the sunshine and as we were there the oncologist came with some news: It is cancer.  They don't like to use that word with kids, because childhood cancer is very different than adults and kids are super resilient, so when we explained it to Kenzi we avoided it and used the word "mass". No matter the term, it's a part of our lives now. We don't have any words, our hearts are just broken. We will hopefully learn more next week; what type of mass it is and how to best treat it. It has a name.

 Sunday was a "quiet" day. Wes left that morning to go see the kids in Vernon and Kenzi and I hung out. She's super excited to play Minecraft and I actually had to drag her outside to sit on the patio with me. We had a movie night and we really felt God's peace that evening, so thanks to everyone praying for that.  Yesterday was hard. We had a meeting with the doctors. Her mass is called a ewing sarcoma, which is a type of bone cancer. The plan is to start chemo this Friday. Until then, they will be doing a lot of baseline tests. Yesterday she had a kidney function test, today is a bone marrow biopsy, which she will be put to sleep for and tomorrow is the dreaded PET scan to see if it has spread anywhere else in the body. Please pray that it has stayed in the chest cavity. Thursday will be a long meeting where they will lay out the "roadmap" of our treatment plan. Today marks one year that our lives changed forever. On April 14, 2021 Kenzi was flown to BC Children's Hospital when they found a giant tumor in her chest. 2 days later they confirmed it was cancer and a week later, after many more tests, she was starting chemotherapy. We are so grateful to be on the other side of treatment now, but it's not without its many scars. Looking back somedays, it feels surreal and we can't even believe it happened. Other times, the emotions are still so raw that the tears won't stop flowing.  We survived treatment by living one day at a time. From April to January, Kenzi spent 276 days away from home; 123 of those, were actually in the hospital and 50 of them were spent in Toronto.
